Chat with your PDF
Upload any PDF and chat with it. Every answer cites the page and paragraph it came from. Ideal for legal, research, and enterprise documents.
AI Chat with PDF is coming soon
We're putting the finishing touches on this one. Sign up and we'll email you when it's ready.
Chat with PDF turns a static document into an interactive Q&A session. Upload a research paper, contract, manual, or report — then ask questions in plain English and get answers grounded in the document's content. Every answer cites the specific page and paragraph it came from, so you can verify the AI didn't hallucinate. Far faster than skimming for an answer, and the citations make it trustworthy enough for legal and research workflows.
How to ai chat with pdf step by step
- 1
Upload your PDF
Drop the PDF you want to query. We extract its text (OCR for scans), chunk it into searchable embeddings, and prepare it for retrieval-augmented Q&A.
- 2
Ask any question in plain English
Type your question in the chat box. The AI retrieves the most relevant passages from your document, generates an answer grounded in those passages, and cites the page numbers.
- 3
Follow up with refined questions
The conversation is stateful — ask 'tell me more about that' or 'how does this compare to section 5' and the AI keeps the context. Every answer remains grounded in the source document.
Why ai chat with pdf on PDFOnly
Citations on every answer
We use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): the AI cites the specific passage it used. If the citation doesn't actually support the claim, you'll spot it immediately.
Frontier-model quality
Powered by Claude and GPT-class models, not weaker open-source approximations. Critical for nuanced legal, medical, and technical questions.
Privacy preserved
Documents and conversation history are encrypted at rest, never used to train AI models, and auto-deleted after the session ends (or 7 days on Pro for follow-up access).
What people use ai chat with pdf for
A few common scenarios. If your workflow looks like one of these, this tool is a good fit.
Quickly find specific information in a long document
Instead of Ctrl+F'ing for keywords, ask 'what's the indemnification cap in this contract?' and get the answer with the exact page reference.
Compare claims across multiple sections
Ask 'does the section on data retention contradict the privacy policy in section 3?' and the AI cross-references both sections to give you a reasoned answer.
Extract structured data points
Ask 'list every dollar figure mentioned in this report with its context' and get a clean enumerated list — no manual page-flipping.
Onboard onto a new technical document
New to a codebase, API spec, or technical manual? Ask the AI for a quick orientation: 'what are the main components and how do they relate?' Saves hours.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate are the answers?
On factual lookups in well-structured documents: 90-95% accurate. On complex reasoning that synthesizes multiple sections: 80-90%. The cited page numbers let you verify any answer in seconds — that's the whole point of grounded Q&A vs free-form ChatGPT.
Can the AI hallucinate?
Less than free-form ChatGPT, because we constrain it to use retrieved passages from your document. But it can still synthesize incorrectly. The citations are your safeguard — if the cited passage doesn't actually support the claim, you'll spot it.
How long can my PDF be?
Pro: up to 200 pages with full quality retrieval. Team: up to 1000 pages. Beyond that, accuracy on questions requiring cross-page synthesis drops — split into thematic chunks for best results.
Will my document be used to train AI models?
No. We use enterprise API tiers from Anthropic and OpenAI with explicit no-training clauses. Documents and conversation history are never retained by the model providers.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Yes — we OCR scans automatically before chunking and indexing. OCR accuracy directly affects answer quality, so clean 300 DPI scans work best.
What languages are supported?
All major languages where the underlying models perform well: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic. Smaller languages have weaker performance.
Can multiple people chat with the same PDF?
Team plan includes shared workspaces — upload a PDF once, your whole team can query it. Conversations are private per user but the indexed document is shared, saving processing cost and time.
