Rotating PDF pages fixes the most common scanning frustration: pages that come out sideways or upside down because the document was scanned in the wrong orientation. PDFOnly's PDF rotator turns any combination of pages by 90°, 180°, or 270°, and saves the rotation permanently into the file — no more spinning the PDF reader every time you open it. Rotate every page at once, or specify exactly which pages need it. Lossless: text, fonts, and images are preserved exactly as they were.

How to rotate pdf step by step

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drop the PDF you want to rotate. We accept any standard PDF up to 100 MB free, 200 MB Pro.

  2. 2

Pick rotation angle and target pages

Choose 90° clockwise, 180°, or 90° counter-clockwise from the dropdown. To rotate every page, leave the page input blank. To rotate specific pages, enter ranges like '1, 3, 5-10' (the same syntax as Split PDF).

  3. 3

    Click Rotate and download

We use qpdf to rotate at the page-tree level — no re-rendering. The output PDF opens in any reader with the new orientation baked in.

Why rotate pdf on PDFOnly

Permanent rotation, not a viewer hint

Some tools just set a rotation flag your PDF reader honors. Recipients with a different reader may see the original orientation. We rotate at the page content level — the rotation is part of the file regardless of viewer.

Rotate only what needs rotating

Most online tools force all-or-nothing rotation. We let you target specific pages, perfect for fixing a single bad scan in an otherwise correct document.

Lossless and instant

Rotation is a metadata-level change in the PDF page tree, not a re-render. Even 1000-page PDFs rotate in under a second.

What people use rotate pdf for

A few common scenarios. If your workflow looks like one of these, this tool is a good fit.

Fix sideways scans from phone cameras

Your phone scanned the document in landscape but the content is portrait. Rotate every page 90° to fix it permanently before sharing.

Correct upside-down pages from a duplex scanner

Some duplex scanners scan even pages upside-down. Rotate just the even pages by 180° to fix the alternating orientation.

Rotate just the cover page of a multi-page report

If only one page is misoriented (a cover page in landscape attached to a portrait body), rotate that single page rather than touching the rest.

Re-orient mixed-format archive PDFs

Old archives often combine receipts, letters, and forms — some shot landscape, others portrait. Rotate the inconsistent ones for a uniform reading experience.

What you get

  • Rotate by 90° clockwise, 180°, or 90° counter-clockwise
  • Apply to all pages or specific page ranges (e.g. just pages 2, 5, 7-10)
  • Lossless — content is rotated, not re-rendered
  • Saves rotation permanently into the PDF (not just a viewer setting)
  • Free, no signup, no watermarks
  • Files auto-deleted within an hour

Frequently asked questions

Will the rotation be visible in any PDF reader?

Yes. We rotate at the page-content level, so the result is a permanent rotation of the PDF page tree. Adobe Acrobat, Preview, Chrome's PDF viewer, mobile readers — all show the new orientation. No viewer-specific flags.

Can I rotate just a few pages, not the whole file?

Yes. Specify page ranges in the form '1, 3, 5-10' to rotate only those pages. The rest stay untouched.

Will rotation affect text searchability or selection?

No. Text remains fully searchable, selectable, and copyable. Rotation flips the visual orientation but doesn't change the text content or fonts.

Will images get distorted?

No. Images are rotated in 90-degree increments which is a lossless operation. There's no quality loss or pixel shifting.

Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?

Not while it's encrypted. Use Unlock PDF first with the password, then rotate the unlocked version. After rotating you can re-protect with Protect PDF if needed.

What if I want to rotate by an angle other than 90/180/270?

Arbitrary-angle rotation isn't supported. PDF page rotation is defined as 0/90/180/270 in the spec. For arbitrary angles you'd need to convert pages to images, rotate, and re-embed (use PDF to JPG → rotate the images → JPG to PDF).
